JNU vice chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar, whose tenure was marred by controversies, has been appointed as chairman of the University Grants Commission.

In a brief statement, Vice Chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar said, "Our heart goes out to all injured students. The incident (violence) is unfortunate. I would like to tell students that JNU campus is a secure place. "I urge all students to come back to the campus. Let us put the past behind."
The JNUSU holds the Vice-Chancellor responsible for the violence. "He is using henchmen to perpetrate violence on students and vandalise the university," said JNUSU. "The JNU community has a single point of demand. That either this VC resign or the human resource development ministry as the competent authority remove him! Those who are trying to malign and destroy this university will not succeed," demanded JNUSU.
Joshi's comments add to the growing clamour for Kumar's removal.
The UGC chairperson stressed that foreign varsities with campuses in the country can only offer full-time programmes in physical mode and not online or distance learning.
